Rama Rattan



  • Childhood, schooling and college education in Amritsar (born 1950).

  • M.A. in Punjabi literature, Punjabi University, Patiala.

  • Ph.D. on children’s literature in Punjabi, under the guidance of renowned Punjabi novelist, Dr. Dilip Kaur Tiwana, Punjabi University, Patiala.

Major activities and commitments:

  • Organisation and successful running of KAFLA – a group of performing artists, writers, academicians and children – throughout the villages of Punjab, especially during the troubled political times 1990-1995. The aim of the Kafla was to defy the forces of depression, division, darkness and hoplessness, and to generate some hope, some light, some vision amidst political and religious turmoil.
  • Initiator, founder and director of SARANG and SARANG-LOK.
  • Writing and performance of several plays dealing with the issues of the Punjab tragedy, female discrimination, children’s education etc.

  • Inspiring and involving almost all major writers in Punjab to write for children – stories, plays, poems, and essays.

  • Establishing the Hannibal Awards in Punjabi Literature and Arts.
